Democracy and Governance

Democracy is a form of government in which the people govern themselves or elect representatives to govern them. There are several varieties of democracy, some of which provide better representation and more freedoms for their citizens than others. Therefore democracy and good governance are linked with each other to some extent.

In a culturally and ethnically plural country like Pakistan democracy is main thing for its territorial and political integrity. The equitable distribution of economic as well as environmental resources like water, gas etc. among the provinces is possible only through democracy. Historically speaking Pakistan was conceived as a parliamentary democracy with federal structure on the pattern of Westminster.

However, democracy could not strike root in the sixty years of Pakistan's history. In democratic system we can expect good governance. But in Pakistan we never had a democratic government or system. The power always remained in the hands of influentials because of the feudal system and culture in the country.

Numbers of other factors also contribute to the non-democratic system in Pakistan, like corruption, non-business friendly environment, inefficient and unfair judicial system, mishandling of the economy by the government. In Pakistan, politics dominates both governance and democracy.

Political instability, as governments frequently elected on and off, consequently results into frequent policy changes with regard to business and immigration discourage investment and act as hindrance in economic growth of the country. And for this reason many people are of the view that democracy is undesirable for a developing country in which economic growth and the reduction of poverty are top priority. And Pakistan is currently mending its way in both the areas.

Hence need is to create balance between democracy and governance. Because Pakistan 's properity and security rely on a strong democractic institutions that cultivate capable political leadership, a transparent electoral system, and the ability to govern justly and accountably. So that Pakistan achieve its development goals.
